Dear Elon
Such exciting news! I know you will be very pleased – and impressed, I hope. Last night was the first meeting of the “5-things-i-did” group. My friends teased me, saying that you were pulling up in front of the house in your Tesla, that you were actually going to join us. I was pretty sure it couldn’t be true, but I also couldn’t help but glance out the window just in case. I know how busy you are, but maybe you’ll take a swing through some western states and we can meet. I have some important messages from folks in the southwest that I’d love to pass on to you.
Anyway, back to the gathering last night. Fifteen like-minded people came to write postcards and talk about all the great “5-things” they did last week. Just think, 5 things x 15 people = 75 things! And that’s just in one week from one little group out here in the sticks. I know there are other “5-things-i-did” groups springing up all over. You better get a bigger inbox for the avalanche of postcards you’ll be getting.
I shared all the things I’ve done since you inspired me, and everyone added to the list. We now have dozens of places to put our money, our energy and our support to be sure that we can hang onto our democracy. We’ll be meeting again in a month to talk about more things we can do. I would love to put one of my postcards on a billboard on the interstate, giving you credit for the idea of course. Wouldn’t that be fabulous? You’re probably sick of hearing it by now, but I am forever grateful for your genius idea to report five things we did each week.
And before I go, please take care of yourself. The recent pictures of you look a little pasty. I think I see bags under the eyes, and you don’t seem to be combing your hair in the morning. These can be serious signs of stress, depression and bad diet. Be sure to eat healthy. I’ve got a good tofu recipe I’ll pass on.
Have a nice day!
Lucy
How ’bout one of the 5 things be getting out the word about the 1000+ anti fascist demonstrations happening on April 5th? The one in Santa Fe is noon at the Roundhouse. Mobilize.us/HandsOff has a map of all the registered demonstrations. Guarenteed there is one near you. Tell all your friends. This is going to be huge and I it will be very impactful.
Absolutely, Les. Thank you. This is the protest to show up for…even if you are not a protester, marcher, sign-holder, just bring your body to your capitol. I bet you’ll be glad you did.
This comment is from Larry Cerrillo, with whom Captcha was not cooperating:
Lucy I am a bit miffed, it that is the correct word, for being a bit disappointed and curious about what it is you are trying to accomplish with the “five things”. I would agree that it is a great exercise to keep us on our toes, but what beyond that is it accomplishing? As mediators, I should think our energies would be best addressed at finding ways to right the ship. Perhaps many have forgotten that Obama tried to form a DOGE and assigned Biden to head it up. Unfortunately, we know how that turned out. No question that Elon is heavy handed and not as knowledgeable as one would like about how the different agencies contribute to the benefit of many, but as the old cliche, let’s not through out the baby with the bath water”. The country is 3.6 trillion in debt and getting worse. That is not sustainable. Perhaps send Elon helpful information that can be of use in righting the ship without destroying the docks.
Thank you, Larry, as always for asking the tough questions. I really appreciate it. And of course I don’t have an easy answer. My goal with the postcards is twofold: 1) give people a chance to have a little fun if they want to, bragging to Elon about the things they have done [to try to stop his destructive process], and 2) getting out from under the bed and doing five things that they consider productive. That’s all I’m hoping for. To be honest I don’t feel very useful as a mediator right now. The “sides” are formidable, both seriously entrenched, and the stakes are huge. Maybe someone younger and more energetic and optimistic can give it a try — I hope so, and will support them all the way. As for throwing the baby out with the bathwater, that seems to me exactly what Elon is doing. If I were in the same room with him, I would try to have that conversation about righting the ship without destroying the docks (a great metaphor!) Yes, I agree there should be serious pruning of the federal government, done carefully and rationally. The chainsaw is not the tool and is ruining lives here and abroad. Thanks again, Larry, for reaching out. I’m always glad to hear from you… and the more thoughtful for it.
Hey Lucy, thank you for doing “5 Things I Did” and inspiring many others to speak out too. People want to do something, and your 5 Things help give ideas and suggestions when we are not sure what to do.
In a different approach, here are 5 Things I Didn’t Do:
I didn’t make someone: 1. Gasp in disbelief 2. Gulp in fear 3. Shake their head in incomprehension 4. Lose their livelihood 5. Cry
That’s it.
Time to “Do” more and time to not “Undo” people’s lives.
Love it, Vangee! Thanks so much for commenting. It’s great to hear from you.
